Griffon Media at 含羞草社区 celebrated a successful 2022-2023 school year during their awards banquet on April 20. Seven students were honored for earning state and national recognition for their work with Griffon News, The Griffon yearbook and KGSM-TV, and 12 additional awards were presented to students and an alumnus. Two journalism students from 含羞草社区 recently received national awards for videos they created. Kendra Simpson, pictured, was one of five national News Engagement Day TikTok video contest winners. Kudos to Josh Pohl, convergent journalism major and editor-in-chief of the Griffon News, for scoring an Honorable Mention in the Apple awards at the National College Media Association Convention in New York City. The Griffon News competed against other four-year universities with fewer than 5,000 undergraduates.

Arianne Boma, convergent journalism major and Griffon yearbook editor-in-chief, won the national second-place Apple award for yearbook cover design at the National College Media Association Convention in New York City. The national winning design will don the cover of the 2022 (96th volume) of The Griffon yearbook.

Dr. James Carviou and Dr. Jennifer Jackson, associate professors in the Department of Communication, wrote a book chapter in the new book 鈥淩hetoric of Masculinity: Male Body Image, Media, and Gender Role Stress/Conflict.鈥� Their chapter, 鈥淎 Critical Exploration of Pandemic Protection as a Threat to Masculinity: Facemask Usage and Gender,鈥� explores the gender divide that exists surrounding the intentions and actual use of face coverings, looking specifically at male gender behaviors associated with wearing or not wearing face coverings and how opinion leaders鈥� influence through the use of Twitter impacted these behaviors.
