Missouri Western PTA students achieve 100% pass rate on national board exam

Sept. 27, 2023–All 14 students who graduated from the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at ��߲�� this year passed the national board exams on their first attempt.

“A 100% pass rate on a national exam is an exceptional achievement, and I am proud to congratulate our students for their outstanding performance and our faculty who prepared them so diligently,” said Dr. Laura Reynolds, provost and vice president of academic affairs. “The PTA program is an outstanding example of the way Missouri Western prepares our students for life after graduation.”

Missouri Western’s 100% pass rate on the compares to a national average of 83.6%. The students’ success is the result of some deliberate changes the program has made to better prepare graduates for a career in physical therapy.��

“We have been working very hard the past three years to make curriculum changes to reflect the needs of the workforce and to better prepare students for the board exam,” said Dr. Maureen Holtz, assistant professor and director of the PTA program. “The attainment of a 100% first-time pass rate underscores the legacy of quality and commitment to excellence that the MWSU PTA program has demonstrated since its beginning 25 years ago.”

Missouri Western PTA students not only do well on the board exam, they earn employment in the field. Holtz says the program has had a 100% job placement rate after one year in each of the last three years, and she expects that to continue with the Spring 2023 class.

“While the success of our graduates on the board exam certainly demonstrates the high level of knowledge attained in the program, we as a program are most proud of the level of professionalism that our students have developed, which prepares them to continue to grow as health care professionals,” Holtz said.

Missouri Western offers an Associate of Applied Science in Physical Therapist Assistant degree that prepares students for a rewarding hands-on healthcare career in a variety of clinical settings. The program begins each fall, and students take a total of 72 credit hours over four semesters and two Summer sessions.

The 2023 PTA graduates will be honored for their 100% pass rate at halftime of the Griffon football homecoming game vs. Emporia State Saturday. Also honored will be the December 2022 nursing graduates, who also achieved a 100% pass rate on their licensing exam, the NCLEX-RN.

School of Nursing and Health Professions to host Open House April 19

April 14, 2023–The ��߲�� School of Nursing and Health Professions will host a Health Professions Open House for prospective students on Wednesday, April 19.��

Participants will be able to meet with Missouri Western faculty and learn more about careers in health, sport and exercise science, nursing, physical therapy assistant, population health management, respiratory therapy and social work. Tours of the state-of-the art labs in Murphy Hall are included. Light refreshments will be served.

Check-in will begin at 5 p.m. in the Eder Hall Lobby, with activities scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30. Admission is free, but advance registration is requested at .��

Spring Commencement May 6

The Spring Commencement Ceremony for approximately 500 graduates of ��߲�� will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6 on Craig Field at Spratt Memorial Stadium. Stadium gates will open to guests at 9:30 a.m. The ��߲�� Alumni Association will hold a reception for graduates and their families following the ceremony in the home concourse area of the stadium.

Connor Samenus, business major from Kansas City, Missouri, will give the student commencement address, “What It Means to be a Griffon.”

In the event of inclement weather, the commencement ceremony will be held inside the Looney Complex arena at 2 p.m. Saturday. Because of limited seating in the arena, tickets have been issued to graduates for the indoor ceremony.

Seating will be available in Potter Hall to accommodate guests who prefer not to sit outside if the ceremony is held in Spratt Stadium, or who are unable to be seated in Looney if weather forces the ceremony indoors.

Other commencement-related activities free and open to the public include:

International Student Farewell and Sash Ceremony, 2 p.m. Friday, May 5, Fulkerson Center. Graduating international students will be presented with a sash of their country of citizenship. Exchange students will receive a certificate of appreciation.
Graduate Hooding Ceremony, 7 p.m. Friday, May 5, Fulkerson Center. For the first time, a special hooding ceremony will be held for graduate students receiving their master’s degrees, with a reception immediately following.

Missouri Western anticipates 442 undergraduates and 51 graduate students earning their degrees this semester. In addition, approximately 30 students who graduated in December but were unable to participate in the rescheduled Winter Commencement will walk across the stage May 6.

Gleason to lead School of Nursing and Health Professions

Dr. Robyn Gleason

Dr. Robyn Gleason has been named associate dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions at ��߲��. Dr. Gleason, previously dean of graduate nursing at Keiser University in Florida, will begin her duties in January.

“Dr. Gleason’s strong background in nursing, public health and health information has prepared her well to provide strong oversight of the unique admissions processes, regulatory expectations, clinical affiliations and other factors that make the programs in the School of Nursing and Health Professions unique,” said Dr. Kathleen O’Connor, dean of professional studies. “Under her leadership I believe our high-quality healthcare programs can grow even stronger.”

Dr. Gleason earned her doctorate in nursing and master’s degrees in nursing and public health from the University of Florida. She also received a graduate certificate in health informatics from Duke University. Prior to joining Keiser University in 2015, she taught at the University of Florida College of Nursing and Bethune-Cookman University’s School of Nursing. Dr. Gleason is a 2016 Fellow in the Leadership in Academic Nursing Program of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

“The St. Joseph community, Missouri Western and the university’s health care partners all seem to be very forward-thinking,” Dr. Gleason said. “I believe Missouri Western’s School of Nursing and Health Professions has a great future, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

The School of Nursing and Health Professions was established earlier this year within the College of Professional Studies. The School includes Missouri Western’s master’s degree program in nursing and undergraduate programs for nursing, health information management, physical therapist assistant and the new population health management degree, established by a gift from Mosaic Life Care.
