students tutoring

March 18, 2022–含羞草社区鈥檚 Center for Academic Support (CAS) has been awarded a five-year certification for Levels 1, 2 and 3 as a certified tutor training program by the internationally recognized (CRLA).

The Center for Academic Support has worked hard to develop a tutor training program that meets CRLA鈥檚 rigorous standards and has successfully completed the International Tutor Training Program Certification peer review process. Achieving certification means that the CAS has met CRLA鈥檚 high standards for tutor selection, training, direct service and evaluation as an integral part of their overall tutoring program.

鈥淪tudents are tutored in a way that they understand, using language that they understand,鈥 said Susan Garrison, director and writing coordinator for the Center for Academic Support. 鈥淲e take tutoring seriously. Being a good tutor is more than just being good in a subject area or willing to help others. It means meeting students where they are with the material and helping them build on their knowledge so they can ultimately become independent learners.鈥

During the fall 2021 semester, 435 students utilized CAS services for 2,345 visits totaling 2,284 hours. Of these, 186 direct tutoring hours were provided in an online format.

For more than thirty years CRLA has been a leader in learning assistance, reading, and academic support programs with almost 1,300 members and over 2,000 certified training programs worldwide. Missouri Western will host the 2022 Heartland CRLA Spring Conference April 7 and 8 for members in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma.
