含羞草社区 music department will host the annual jazz concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013 in Potter Hall Theater. The concert will feature performances by the Lab Band, Vocal Jazz and Jazz Ensemble. Special guest Dave Scott will perform with the Lab Band and Jazz Ensemble.
Scott, an award-winning trumpet player with a wide range of professional experience, will be an artist-in-residence at Missouri Western for one day. During that day he will give master classes on jazz improvisation, jazz trumpet playing, and will give some private jazz lessons to those that sign up. 听He will also rehearse with the two jazz groups in preparation for the concert.
Currently residing in New York, Scott has been composing for and performing with his own jazz quintet. The quintet released 鈥淪ong For Amy鈥 on the SteepleChase label in 2004.听The recording received critical acclaim in JazzTimes in March of 2005.听Scott also co-leads a quartet with tenor saxophonist Tony Malaby.听The group has a CD released on the Nine Winds label.听Many of Scott鈥檚 original works are featured on the release.听He has also toured and recorded as a featured soloist with the Jim Widner Big Band.
Scott鈥檚 ability to perform on both trumpet and piano gives him a unique perspective as a clinician.听Currently on the jazz faculty at Western Connecticut State University and formerly at the University of Southern California, Scott coaches combos and teaches improvisation to jazz majors.听His professional activities include performances and tours with such jazz notables as the Clark Terry Big Band, Bobby Shew, Bob Sheppard, Vinny Golia, Donny McCaslin, Ben Monder and Joe LaBarbera.听 In 1984 he was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in jazz performance.
This event is open to the public. General admission is $5 and Western students with their I.D. card is $3. The Missouri Western Arts Society has underwritten the residency of Dave Scott, and society members can get in free by showing their membership card.
