Description: AFL-CIO Community Services is preparing to distribute shoes through their 2021 Soles for Christ Shoe Program and are in need of multiple volunteers to assure the program runs smoothly.

Soles for Christ is a program that enables any child in grades preschool through 12th in Andrew, Buchanan or Doniphan counties to receive a free new pair of shoes to start the upcoming school year. The program began in 2003 with over 200 pairs of shoes given away. In the 18 years of the program, 14,885 children have received a pair of shoes through this program.

Depending on the day of volunteering, job opportunities involve setting up and organizing shoes, registration, sizing and fitting shoes, or packing leftover shoes at the end of the event.

Requirements Prior to Service: Please contact Becky Gach @ 816-364-1131 / becky.gach@helpmenow.org to register and provide the exact times you will be working and your phone number. Volunteer are asked to work a minimum of at least 2 hours but are welcome to work as many hours as you would like.

This is a hands-on volunteer job where there will be a lot of bending and up and down work. If you need to have a seated position, let the coordinator know.

Description:Take recycled boxes that have been broken down from Sisters of Solace to the Recycling Station

Sisters of Solace is a ministry that offers hospitality and a sacred space for women to heal from trauma and addiction. To help fun their ministry, SOS makes candles and wax melts. There is a lot of cardboard packaging that they receive which needs to be transported to the Recycling Station.

Kim Sigrist

 

Jan. 6, 2021–Kim Sigrist will lead the Center for Service at ߲. Sigrist is currently Missouri Western’s executive director of enrollment management.

“Kim is a Griffon through and through, and her love for the University and our students combined with her strong ties to the community will provide outstanding opportunities for our students to volunteer with area agencies,” said Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy, interim president.

The Center for Serviceprovides students with opportunities to learn and serve by connecting them with volunteer opportunities in the community. Students can earn elective credits for their community service.

“Meaningful service experience goes well beyond earning elective credits”, Sigrist said. “We believe our students can gain experiences that will benefit them as they graduate and enter the workforce, while at the same time instill a lifelong passion for serving the community.”

Sigrist graduated from Missouri Western with a Bachelor of Science Technology in Business Management/Legal Studies. Her current time at Missouri Western started in 2015, serving as administrative assistant in the Department of Athletics, then Executive Associate to the President and Secretary to the Board of Governors before moving to her enrollment management role earlier this year.

Previously at Missouri Western, she served as an employee relations clerk, admissions counselor and director of the Pass the Power adult literacy program. Sigrist also worked for the St. Joseph School District for 10 years.

Sigrist is a member of Missouri Western’s Gold Coat Club Board of Directors and a former member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. She and her husband Robertare longtime members of the Western League of Excellence and United Way Crystal Circle.

Sigrist succeeds Dr. Gary Clapp, who has been named director of the Innovation Stockyard.

Description:Learn about the St. Joseph Museums collections as you help catalogue, research and preserve over 200,000 artifacts. Museums all over the country are working to digitize paper records to digital systems and we are no exception. Opportunities include:

  • Working to digitize paper records
  • Transcribe audio files
  • Scan documents
  • Inventory objects
  • Photograph objects

Some inventories we are currently working on are archaeological dig site artifacts, taxidermy mounts, and seal shell collections.

Description:The St. Joseph Museums organize a minimum of four (4) educational programs per month. We are looking for students to spark a smile and be a mentor in the community. Event duties may include: Help with planning, Setup, Facilitate, and/or Take Down. Virtual and in-person programming are being taught at this time. Current in-person events are following these guidelines for COVID-19; limited capacity, mask required, and social distancing during the event.

Children’s Programs (Geared towards K-6thGrade)

  • ArKIDtecture Club which meets the last Sunday of the month from 1-3pm
  • American Girl Doll Club which meets the second Sunday of the month from 1-3pm
  • Imagineers Club which meets the second Tuesday of the month from 5-7pm

Adult Programs

  • Craft-tea Night meets the last Thursday of the month from 5-7pm

Most programs are located at the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion, but some locations vary depending on the event. Help can be for one specific program or for several.

Description: Downtown Different helps small businesses engage and compete in the digital environment. Downtown Different collects the most visit-worthy communities, antique stores, restaurants, museums, wineries, bed and breakfasts and boutiques for you to see in one place. Students will meet with local and regional businesses (in person, phone, email or virtually), gather photo(s) of the business and upload information into an online directory. Script may need to be developed to maintain consistency in communication between businesses.

Project opportunities are virtual exercise instructors, virtual instructors for basic computer technology for seniors, face to face or virtual tech support for PSSI’s office and/or web page, virtual case management (social work), virtual educational instruction (history, arts, literature) and assistance with marketing our services (face to face or virtual)

Mosaic Life Care and Mosaic Life Care Foundation has welcomed multiple Center for Service volunteers from Missouri Western. Four volunteers have been placed at the Mosaic Life Care Auxiliary Gift Shop, guest relations, distribution and emPowerU.

McKenzie Waters, student and volunteer, has chosen to volunteer at the Mosaic Life Care Auxiliary Gift Shop.

“The people here are amazing,” Waters said. “This will definitely be a future workplace for me.”
