Internships provide Missouri Western students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent. An internship is a legitimate learning experience benefitting the student and not simply an operational work experience that just happens to be conducted by a student.<\/p>\n<p>An internship may be full or part time, on or off campus, paid or unpaid, and may be credit or non-credit bearing. Internship experiences have a fixed start and end date that generally, though not exclusively, coincide with one of the three MWSU academic terms. Credit bearing internship experiences should engage students in a minimum of 45 hours of work for each credit earned.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers <a href=\"https:\/\/naceweb.org\/\">(NACE)<\/a> an internship:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Must be a learning experience that applies knowledge gained in the classroom.<\/li>\n<li>Teaches skills or knowledge that can be transferred to other employment settings.<\/li>\n<li>Has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications.<\/li>\n<li>Has clearly defined learning goals related to the professional goals of the student\u2019s academic coursework.<\/li>\n<li>Provides supervision by, and routine feedback from, a professional with expertise in the field.<\/li>\n<li>Includes resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer to support learning goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default fusion-toggle-no-divider fusion-toggle-boxed-mode\" role=\"tabpanel\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-selected=\"false\" aria-controls=\"e851cffac8ac92c9a\" role=\"tab\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion-7075-1\" data-target=\"#e851cffac8ac92c9a\" href=\"#e851cffac8ac92c9a\"><span class=\"fusion-toggle-icon-wrapper\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><i class=\"fa-fusion-box\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"fusion-toggle-heading\">Who Can\/Should Engage in an Internship?<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"e851cffac8ac92c9a\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<p>Students at any academic level may benefit from an internship experience. Internship experiences provide students with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018Real world\u2019 work experience.<\/li>\n<li>The opportunity to experience a potential career path before having to commit to it.<\/li>\n<li>A stronger resume.<\/li>\n<li>A professional network.<\/li>\n<li>Potential future employment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-panel panel-default fusion-toggle-no-divider fusion-toggle-boxed-mode\" role=\"tabpanel\"><div class=\"panel-heading\"><h4 class=\"panel-title toggle\"><a aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-selected=\"false\" Experience<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div><div id=\"1e2adc7de7b4e6158\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse \"><div class=\"panel-body toggle-content fusion-clearfix\">\n<p>As an applied learning experience, Missouri Western has established criteria that should be part of any credit bearing internship.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>It must be structured, intentional and authentic.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The activity must be a structured experience with a formal process.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Defined learning outcomes should be identified and communicated to all stakeholders (student, employer, faculty supervisor).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Roles and responsibilities must be clearly defined.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The internship should have hands-on and\/or real-world context that draws on the student\u2019s academic training.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>It must require preparation, orientation and training.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students should have sufficient background and foundational education, as well as a plan to support a successful outcome.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The training and plan should include learning and performance expectations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>It must include monitoring and continuous improvement.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students should receive regular constructive criticism and feedback from a dedicated workplace mentor\/supervisor.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>It must require structured reflection and acknowledgment.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There must be a structured opportunity for students to reflect on their experiences and to evaluate the outcomes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reflection should demonstrate the relevance of the experience to student learning, including the student\u2019s articulation of how the experience draws on and improves this learning and meets defined objectives.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>It must be assessed and evaluated.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Outcomes and processes should be systematically documented.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students should receive appropriate and timely feedback.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Criteria guided by and adapted from the workplace experience, a focus on the development and assessment of essential workplace skills (career ready competencies) is also critical.\u00a0 Essential skills competency areas professional learning, awareness of one\u2019s strengths and weaknesses, navigation of career opportunities, and networking to build relationships within and without one\u2019s organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Communication<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts, and perspectives with persons inside and outside of an organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Critical Thinking<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Identify and respond to needs based upon an understanding of situational context and logical analysis of relevant information<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Equity and Inclusion<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Definition: Demonstrate the awareness, attitude, knowledge, and skills required to equitably engage and include people from different local and global cultures. style=\"transform:translate3d(0,0,0);\"><p>Learning objectives are specific, measurable statements that articulate what a student should accomplish or learn during their internship experience.\u00a0 They should be clear, concise, measurable, achievable and related to the experience.\u00a0 Learning objectives provide a means for the evaluation of the experience and may factor into the assigned grade.\u00a0 Writing the learning objectives should be a collaborative effort between the student, faculty advisor or internship coordinator and, wherever possible, the onsite supervisor where the internship will take place.\u00a0 When developing learning objectives ask the following questions to ensure that they are SMART goals:<\/p>\n<p><b>S<\/b>pecific -Does it identify a specific area or skill set?<br \/>\n<b>M<\/b>easurable \u2013 Can it be measured?<br \/>\n<b>A<\/b>chievable \u2013 Can it be accomplished given the student\u2019s foundational training and the resources, training, and environment provided by the organization?<br \/>\n<b>R<\/b>elevant \u2013 Can it be accomplished within the context of the internship?<br \/>\n<b>T<\/b>ime Bound \u2013 Can it be accomplished within the time frame of the semester?<\/p>\n<p>There are three types of learning objectives: Academic, Professional and Personal.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-tabs fusion-tabs-1 classic
