Men’s and Women’s Basketball /alumni/2019/01/28/mens-and-womens-basketball-2-2/ /alumni/2019/01/28/mens-and-womens-basketball-2-2/#respond Mon, 28 Jan 2019 15:02:06 +0000 /alumni/?p=4363 The men’s basketball team under Head Coach Sundance Wicks stands at 9-11 overall with their latest win over University of Nebraska-Kearney on Jan. 26. After a Nebraska Kearney three-pointer cut the Griffons’ lead to just one point with 13 seconds remaining, Lavon HightowerÌýnailed both free throws following a Loper foul to extend the lead to three. The Lopers missed the potential game-tying three on the ensuing possession, giving Missouri Western (9-11, 3-6 MIAA) the 83-79 road victory.

The win broke a four-game losing skid which included a loss to Fort Hays State on Jan. 24.

Women’s basketball under Head Coach Rod Edmisson came up short against University of Nebraska-Kearney 62-53. The GriffonsÌýtrailed by as much as 13 points in the fourth quarter before chipping the deficit to just four in the final minute. However, Nebraska Kearney (12-7, 5-5 MIAA) made five of its final six free throws for the victory.

The women lost to Fort Hays State on Jan. 24, but beat Northwest Missouri State at home on Jan. 19.

Next up for the men and women are two home games — 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31 against Missouri Southern, and 2 and 4 p.m. against Pittsburg State on Feb. 2. That game is Missouri Western’s Military Appreciation game.

Donation secures new football helmets /alumni/2019/01/28/donation-secures-new-football-helmets/ /alumni/2019/01/28/donation-secures-new-football-helmets/#respond Mon, 28 Jan 2019 14:39:22 +0000 /alumni/?p=4355 Thanks to a anonymous donation, Missouri Western football players will have the safest helmet options available – VICIS ZERO1 helmets which were the highest-rated helmets in 2018 NFL and NFLPA testing. Additionally, the team also purchased top-rated Riddell and Schutt helmet models.

All members of the 2019 Griffon football team will have two helmets, one black and one white, that meet the top-performance standards from recent studies by the NFL and Virginia Tech.

“We are extremely fortunate to have program supporters that share our vision for Missouri Western becoming a leader in NCAA Division II Athletics,” said Josh, Looney, director of athletics. “Prioritizing student athlete health and safety is a crucial pillar in the continued development of Griffon Athletics. I believe this investment makes MWSU football the most advanced D-II program in the country as it relates to student athlete safety.”

The ratings in the NFL study were based on the helmets’ ability to reduce head impact severity measures in laboratory testing. Test conditions were intended to represent potentially concussive head impacts in the NFL. Several Griffons wore VICIS helmets during the 2018 season and were impressed with the performance and comfort of the helmets.

The 2019 season will be the 50thÌýseason of Missouri Western football. The anniversary will be celebrated throughout the season, and will include uniform selections featuring the new helmets.

The women won 68-66, thanks to a shot by Melia Richardson with 0.8 seconds remaining in the game. The Griffons set the tone early with their defense in the first quarter, holding Emporia State to 11 percent shooting and just nine points in the first quarter. Both teams picked up the scoring pace in the second quarter, shooting a combined 61 percent as the Griffons took a 27-26 lead into halftime.

Richardson led all scorers in the first half with 10 points. The Griffons outscored the Lady Hornets 18-14 in the third quarter to take a five-point lead into the final quarter. Emporia State used an 11-2 run to take its first lead of the second half with 4:29 to play. Katrina Roenfeldt’sÌýfree throw gave the Griffons the 66-64 lead with 28 seconds remaining, but Emporia State tied the game at 66 with 19 seconds left.

Men came up short 85-79. Their record stood at 8-9, 2-4 in the MIAA after the Emporia game.ÌýThe Griffons struggled offensively down the stretch in the second half, as the Hornets outscored the Griffons 21-9 over the final seven minutes of the game.ÌýEmporia State was lights out from the opening tip, jumping out to a 16-point lead in the first nine minutes. The Griffons began to chip away at the deficit halfway through the first half, using a 20-9 run to trail by just one point at halftime. Tyrell CarrollÌýkept the Griffons in the game in the first half. Carroll had 17 points on 64 percent shooting going into halftime. Alex Martin’sÌýlayup with just under nine minutes to play gave the Griffons their largest lead of the second half at 68-58, but the Hornets regained the lead on a three pointer with 4:26 remaining. Tyus Millhollin hit Bryan HudsonÌýon a layup to bring the Griffons within just two at 78-76 with under 90 seconds left. On the next possession, Emporia State’s Aaron McGee pulled down a crucial offensive rebound and converted the layup to stretch the lead back to four. The Griffons shot 48 percent from the field in the loss.

As Griff Gab went to press, the Griffons were set to play Northwest Missouri State at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19 in the Looney Complex. Results of those games will be in next week’s edition.

The court will be officially named Tom Smith Court at a ceremony at half-time of the Feb. 16 men’s game against University of Central Missouri.

Fans in attendance will receive a memento commemorating the occasion.Ìý

Smith roamed the sidelines as the head coach of the Griffons from 1988-2013, retiring as the winningest head men’s basketball coach in MIAA history with 519 wins as an MIAA coach and 618 total coaching victories. In 25 seasons at MWSU, Smith went 448-279 with a 241-181 mark in MIAA games. Smith won five regular-season MIAA championships and four MIAA postseason championships, including leading Missouri Western to a sweep of both association titles in Missouri Western’s inaugural season in the MIAA, 1989-90. During Smith’s tenure, Missouri Western qualified for the NCAA Division II Regional Championships 11 times. He was named MIAA Coach of the Year twice at Missouri Western and once at Central Missouri and coached 51 All-MIAA selections, six All-Region picks and three NCAA All-Americans.
Ìý
Smith was inducted into the Missouri Western Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006 and is also a member of the MIAA Hall of Fame, Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, Missouri Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame and the Valparaiso Athletics Hall of Fame.
Ìý
Prior to becoming head coach at Missouri Western, Smith also had stints as head coach at Valparaiso and Central Missouri. After retiring as head men’s basketball coach following the 2012-13 season, Smith also led the MWSU women’s tennis program for one year from 2013-14.

His wife, Patsy, was a longtime head women’s tennis coach and administrator at Missouri Western, retiring in 2014.
